May have lost 3 clutchs.................

wisema2297 Jun 16, 2007 08:58 AM

I came home from work this morning at about 8 am and checked on my incubator and about had a heart attack when I thermometer displayed 119F!!! My thermostat crapped out during the night.
A few of the 46 eggs still look normal but most have sunken in a bit and still others have also discolored in spots. I am hoping that the still normal looking ones will make it but then I may have kinks to deal with if they hatch.

As soon as I saw this I placed all egg containers out side where the temps where in the low 70's to cool them off. I dug out a new thermostat had it set and placed the eggs back in the incubator. I am hoping that they were not at those temps all night and it will e interesting to see if anything survives.

I am sorry to hear this. That is a real shame.

Last year I used one of those cheep incubators with little luck. In the fall, I purchased a thermostat unit from Boaphile Plastics. I used it with Zoo Med’s Repti Heat Cable to control the temperatures in my cooling unit. It worked perfectly. This spring, I started using these same two items in conjunction with a 50 gallon cooler to make an incubator and it is working perfectly. I have two clutches going, and I should start to see snakes emerge around the 4th and the 24th of July.

The thermostat from Boaphile Plastics wasn't cheep, but it is made with solid parts and is worth the money. Please do let us know if any of the eggs hatch. I feel for you on this one.

I'm a huge fan of just using boxes of moist moss placed in a closet. My hatch rate is about 85%.

I agree, I've been putting my snake eggs in the top shelf of a closet for the past 21 years and have lost a few eggs here and there but never a complete clutch.

Thanks Rick. I do have 2 of the 3 females double clutching now and will probably go with room temps (76-80 degrees) for the second clutches.

is that you don't need an incubator or thermostat to incubate their eggy weggys. just put them in a container on a top shelf of your colubrid room. temperature flucuations won't harm a thing. i hope all turns out well with your three clutches.

Sorry to hear about this, Ralph. Hope you can still get some healthy babies from the eggs that survived.

I dont trust anything electrical.I keep my eggs in the bedroom closet. The temps fluctuate from 72 at night to 83 during the day.I may have to wait a few extra days for them to hatch but I can live with that.

If lead paint is so deadly why do they make it so delicious?

My corns are double clutching now and you can bet all eggs will be kept in the closet this time. I've been monitorig the temps in there the past few days and they range from 76-84 depending on if the door is shut or closed.
