Looking for input from those experienced with keeping a male rat with more than one female, ie 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 etc.
Do the mothers steal each others pups or are there any other problems to report? Thanks

As a breeder of pet rats, I will tell you that in my experience, mother rats will share the responsibility of babies together. They tend to make a couple piles of babies and switch up between them so that everybody is nursing everybody.
However, I'm sure that I give my rats much more room than typical feeder breeders, so I don't know how they will act when they are so crowded.
Thanks, I was referring to the mortar mixing tubs from Home Depot or Lowes, 27x20x6. What ratio does everyone recommend for those?
i have up to 1.5 rats in my tubs and hac no problems with the space. the only problem i have run into is 1 colony found out they can chew through the plastic tubs and go exploring. that 1.4 group got sent to jail [20 gal. aquar.] till they are feed off or sold don,t want that bad habit getting out of hand. gene
Gene
Did they chew through the mortar tubs or something else like sterilite?
DeMak
with 50 plus breeders i only have 5 that are chewers they all are the same blood line they all of a suddden started chewing in the corners they had'nt started exploring yet but i came out in the morning and 2 noses where looking out a hole big around as a tennis ball i patched two tubs with aluminum flashing and rivets put the chewers in a 20 gal tank haven't had probs. with any others in those tubs had to put water bottle in tank in hardware cloth after they ate 1 good breeders that need to be feeders !!!!
Ive been breeding rats for almost 10 years now, i have always keep them in acquariums, i keep 1.1 per 10 gallon, or 0.2 nursing mothers, i place my weaned rats in larger 30 gallon tanks with a screen lid and all works out well here. Everyone is happy with the variety of food they get and the COB is a good fattening grain for nursing mothers
