Western hognose.......Legal?

tmlascola Aug 17, 2003 07:41 AM

I was reading an article in Reptiles Magazine in the October issue on page 9. It talks about a federal operation and animals that were confiscated. Of those listed were western hognose. Would I need a permit to keep hogs or did someone make a mistake? Or are they just illeagal to keep. Hope my spelling isn't too bad and thanks for you time.

I think ive heard people saying that thay are illegal to keep in certain states like Ohio. It said they were an endangered species in the article so I dont know exactly how that works; maybe state by state. Im not positive but Im sure someone else on here will have the correct info. EP

It probably depends on whether they are native to your state or not. Here in ontario easterns are illegal to keep because they are native to the southern tip of the province, but westerns are legal since they are not native to the province.

EASTERNS would be illegal in Ohio without a permit. (Er... last I heard... never know when they're going to change something). I did hear about someone in Colorado getting in trouble for Westerns.

How does one go about getting a permit to keep certain species? Do you have to take any classes or do you just apply for one and hope for the best? Just curious. EP

It's a simple application process and I don't think it's that hard to get. The govenment just wants to know where you live. I've heard a lot of permit holders get harrassed by officials trying to find out if ALL their animals are legal. Bleh.

Do you know if it is illegal to keep any animal that is native to your state or just certain ones. Thanks, EP

Ohio law:
You must have a permit for any wildcaught or CB native herp. Frogs, lizards, turtles, all of them. A different more expensive permit is needed if you're breeding them. However, ON the permit it says that your herps cannot be wildcaught. So I'm pretty confused with that part. Snakes and turtles must be PIT tagged for identification.
Exceptions: Frogs, softshell and snapping turtles may be taken with a fishing license, but I believe only if you eat them.(that's all kinds of fair, isn't it?)
Timber rattlers and massasaugas are endangered and can probably only be kept by zoos and state sponsored nature centers and the like.
It's a decent law, but there's just a bad atmosphere surrounding herping in the whole state right now.
Look Ohio Department of Natural Resources up on the internet for a list of native animals and other goodies.
