stevebp Jun 16, 2007 06:02 PM

My eggs are denting about alittle over 3 weeks into incubation. I'm using hatchrite and added 1 ounce of water and it did not help. What should I do? Any help is appreciated thanks.

breed her...
since BP get sexually active from the climate change from cold to hot...she might ne in the mood.
her follicales are probably the right size and she knows she has enough fat reserves to make eggs
females usually go off feed while their follicles grow

i've had a male go off feed for 6 months
start worrying once she starts looking skinny

HatchRite does not need water added, you probably have made it too wet. What kind of containers are you using to keep the eggs in, what kind of incubator, and do the containers have ventilation holes?

I have them in a streilite container 7 quarts. The eggs were denting in before i added the water and on the bag it said that if the eggs dent add 1 ounce of water. should i switch medium?

Do your containers have air holes in them? What kind of incubator are you using?

There are no holes in the container but i cant close it due completely due to the thermometer and thermostat probes, and i use a hovabator.

OK. I had the same problem when I used a hovabator. What I would do is get different containers with more flexible lids, so that you can completely close them over the thermostat/thermometer cords. I used Ziploc plastic containers (the throwaway kind). The lids being open on your containers are causing too much air circulation and drying out your humidity -- adding more water to the HatchRite will only make the subsrate soppy and cause the bottom of your eggs to mold/rot. I would get new containers and dump the HatchRite you added water to, then add new HatchRite exactly as it is when it comes out of the bag. Close the lids, and see if that helps.

I personally do not like Hovabators, when my eggs started having issues with denting, I built an incubator out of a mini-fridge and all have been doing perfectly since then. It cost me a whopping $50... $30 for the fridge from someone on Craigslist and $20 for the heat cable.

Thank you so much for the advise and i will get some new ziplock containers and give it a try. I will also look into making my own incubator. Thanks again

No problem -- This was my first year breeding and I had to learn the hard way with the first clutch in the Hovabator. Had to change the containers, the substrate, and ultimately ditch it and use a fridge. I basically went through the same thing you did, and lost 3 eggs from the first clutch (3 remained and went on to hatching 3 gorgeous healthy babies). That's how I know, it's from experience! I wish you the best and you'll have to share pics once you get everything going well.
