mike d Aug 17, 2003 08:34 AM

i am thinking abut purchasing a cham in a week or two and i was wondering what the best kind to start off with is.. i was thinking about either a vield or a jackson..

are adult veilds colorful?? and can you keep them in pairs?
are adult jacksons colorful?? and can they be kept in pairs?

also if you can post pics of your veilds and jacksons as well as your enclosures it would be very helpful..

thanks mike d

Veileds can not be kept in pairs. you can keep two females together, they do get pretty colorful. Mine is a 7 month old male. It is going to take probably four more posts to show my pics.

where ever you get your chameleon veiled or jackson ask them if they would trade 3 common snappers 2-4 inches and 6 eastern painted turtles for a chameleon or two. Dillon4203@hotmail.com

Woah! Slow down! You have to research lot more about these things. Both Veileds (c. calyptratus) and Panthers (c. pardalis)
are both very solitary creatures even when mating. Keep only one per enclosure. You really need to learn m ore about these before you get one.

i'll second that opinion vv!
here's a pic of a colorful male veiled............

i know i hav to learn more. i read and read before i buy an animal and i make sure i can care for it properly. i may have amade a bad impression asking the questions that i did.. i asked because evey where i look that sells them sells them singularly and in pairs and i doidnt know which way is better to have one or two.

You asked about Jackson's chameleon, too, so here are some pics of my male. He was about 7 months old in these.

Here's a side view. His colors are a little bit brighter now than in the picture because he just shed recently. I took these about a month ago.

And here's his cage.

mike d Aug 17, 2003 03:11 PM

great pics!!! did you buy that cage? or did you make it? if you bought it where did you buy it from..

Jason82 Aug 17, 2003 05:44 PM

I made it myself. I've looked at Cages by Design's cages and they're a little expensive, but they look really nice. There's a link to their site above all the post on the chameleon forum main screen.

I see you use a waterfall. How does it work? need to clean it often? How much does it help with humidity? Why the light on the side of the cage?

Sorry - just curious.

The water fall is kind of a pain in the ass. I have a lot of trouble with it leaking off the left side of the front. I've been trying to fix it with some plastic model contour putty so it won't do that. As far as cleaning it, I put Biotize waste degrader made by Exo Terra in the water, and it seems to keep the water clean. My cham doesn't drink out of it, so it's not a big deal for me if the water isn't totally clean. The light is on the side because I built the cage to slide into my entertainment center where there would normally be a couple of shelves and after I slid it in, I found there was nothing to clip the lamp to, so I drove a nail into the top of the entertainment center and just hung the light on it so it would rest on the side of the cage where there are branches leading to it. There is a flourecent UV bulb across the top in the front.

heres some pictures of my 3 month old and 5 month old jackson's. the jackson's do not get very colorful but the horns make them look awesome. most people on the forum will tell you not to house any chameleons togehter unless you are an expert or have a greenhouse sized enclousure. even when doing this you can only have one male.
