Beardie laying eggs

TNT06 Jun 16, 2007 08:56 PM

My bearded dragon layed eggs on 6-3-07, and in the last week or so, is pushing like she has more eggs to lay. Can she have more? She seems to be having such a hard time trying to get it out. She is active and eating. Any advice? I have tried putting her in a warm bath, but that didn't help!

Yes, it is likely that she is ready to lay a 2nd clutch. Are you providing a nest box? Did you provide one the first time? Dragons have been known to lay up to 7 or 8 clutches. 3 or so is most common.

How can she be having her second clutch, if it hasnt even been a month yet? Yes, I did provide a laying box for her the first time, she did not use it. I will put it back and show her. The last clutch was her first clutch ever. She just looks like she is struggleing so hard. I guess this is normal?

If she is straining and a bath didn't help, take her to a vet ASAP

It is way to early for her to be ready to lay a second clutch, it hasn't even been two weeks since her last clutch. Dragons take 3-4 weeks between clutches. IT seems to me like she retained an egg or two and is trying to get it out, or has some kind of blockage that may not be related to eggs at all. In either case, take her to a vet.

One of mine lays a clutch every 2 weeks!

If she didn't use the nest box last time then it was an unacceptable place for her to lay her eggs. She is more likely straining to retain the eggs rather than lay them as you think.

Descibe what you have as a nest box, how big your dragon is (length, weight) and I may be able to help you. If you provide an acceptable place she will lay them right away. Tell me her cage size substrate etc.

Every dragon is different, a nest box that works for one may be unacceptable for another. I suggest you backchannell me and I'll give you my phone number or you can list yours. You need to do something about this right away.

BDLvr you have weird dragons LOL

3-4 weeks is average time between clutches, sometimes longer, depending on conditions...though I haven't heard of many females producing eggs in less than two weeks.

Maybe. But, Vickie Dachiu says she has had them lay as close as 10 days apart. Even if it's unusual, it must be considered that they can and do lay eggs in way less than 3-4 weeks.

boy, dragons sure can push those eggs out when they really want to. Glad I don't breed dragons myself. Not that I don't like dragons, they are awesome but they are also way to prolific LOL

This is the first time i have heard of dragons having less than two weeks between clutches...hopefully that isn't the norm. Must be a real challenge to get enough food and nutrients into the ladies between clutches.

When a dragon lays big clutches (35 ) there is no way to. So you have to fatten them up as much as possible before the first clutch. A big clutch like that reduces a dragons weight by 150 grams. Pretty hard to replace that in 2-3 weeks. But if they lay smaller clutches 15-20ish it is possible. My little one is getting ready for her 4th clutch and is at an all time weight record (405). I give her constant access to live food and salad. (Of course not at night. lol) They are tremendous eaters between clutches. I think people don't realize just how much food they can push through if they want to and therefore don't offer enough.

Well, I took my bearded dragon to the vet, she said, she was dehydrated and needed calcuim. So, they gave her a shot and gave me calcuim to give her. Since she had a pinkie that morning, the vet would not take an xray, because the pinky or the egg(s) left inside her, would look the same. She said if she was not ok in like 3 days, bring her back and we will do xrays. She laid an egg last nite,,,yeaaa and i found another one in the dirt. I am suppose to give her a bath for 20 mins each day. Hopefully, she will be better now, we will see...thanks

if she is dropping eggs singly, make sure you get the egg laying bin into her cage right away, or just put her into the bin so she can lay the rest of her eggs. Dropping one or two eggs here and there means she can't find a suitable egg laying spot.

I agree and I really feel these are from a 2nd clutch of eggs, not left over from the first clutch as you think.

Just for information, below are the dates and specs. for my 2 egg laying females this year.

Date Wt. Before Wt. After # of Eggs
Taylor
5/8 332 262 17
5/30 343 302 8
6/14 391 308 23

Simone
5/14 632 482 37
5/30 576 467 33

You can see the maximum amount between clutches is 22 days and the minimum is 15.
