onate uro in trouble........

euro_wolfy Aug 17, 2003 08:54 AM

Hello all,
I'm hoping that someone can help me out in this problem. I recently puchased 1 uro. and then a week later purchased 2 more. The newer ones were smaller in size and looked thin and were not as active as the first one. So i took them to the vet and the vet gave me gentocin (antibotic) and ferbendazol (wormer) to see if that clears it up.
One of the two smaller is really active and is gaining weight, tail is getting fat again, but the other one is not as active and is not getting any better. i have to force feed both of the new ones still they each get .6-1 cc of food a day. the mix im giving is baby bird food and the sand fire uro mix (it says its a complete diet)with pedealyte to help rehydrate them, i am aslo giving them fine cut strips of green & yellow sqwash as weel as sweet potatos. then for ther regular food same as above but with lentas, corn , pees, blk eyed pees green beens, carrots and sprinckled with the uro. dust.
One of the two new uro's i only forcefeed in the morning and the one that is still thin it do it morning and night when i get home from work.
could any body sugest what to do next?

Either try feeding the smaller one a portion of the healthy ones feces or get a product to increase the beneficial bacteria in the little ones gut such as acidophilus.

Did the vet do a fecal check and give you those medicines because of specific parasites found in the feces or did he/she just give you those meds because of an assumption about them having parasites because they are (I assume) imported?

I wasn't clear by your post what the living arrangement is right now as far as which of your ornates are living with which. Ornates can be pretty territorial and grumpy with each other and take a long time to establish a friendly pecking order. So if you even just have the two smaller ones together one of the two smaller ones may not be letting the other eat. Or if you have them all three together, the big one may not be letting the little ones eat and you may need to separate them until they are better established with their eating habits and used to captivity. Then you could try to introduce them more slowly with the larger one coming into the territory of the smaller one(s). -Lucy

what i have found can make a world of difference is just taking the uro outside and sitting in the sun with it for a bit. as far as restoring energy goes, it works absolute wonders.
