The double clutch

FunkyRes Jun 17, 2007 05:07 AM

The female lavender that looked to be clutching a second time on her own did. She laid at least one infertile egg, it was very small in size - maybe 1/4 the size of the eggs fertile clutch she laid. It was clearly infertile.

It's possible she laid more than one and consumed the others, I only found one egg. It has been many hours and I think that's it - so either she laid a single infertile egg or she laid more and ate the others.

That reminded me of a beautiful extreme red lavender albino I had that I bred to a super nicy hypo brooks. That was going to be my highlight of the breeding season. Imagine the look on my face after waiting all that time and seeing her laying eggs only to turn around and eat them all within seconds of laying. I guess she was hungry.....for an omelett.

It could be a egg that was retained form the first clutch and she is just getting around to dropping it now..

Could be. She shed a couple days ago (first day since she laid).
I didn't see any signs of retained egg(s), but it was really small.

First shed since she laid - not first day since she shed.
She shed on tuesday, ate on wed, infertile egg (and a poop) on saturday.

Including two this morning, she's laid a total of 4 - spread out.
I definitely should have put her in with a male soon after her first clutch.

I'm 99.9% sure she is done now.
