Carpet Python Questions

FireStorm Jun 17, 2007 03:10 PM

I'm thinking of setting up a really nice display, and I was thinking that a carpet python would be a good choice (as much as I love my ball pythons, they're just not good display snakes). From what I've read, carpet pythons spend enough time not hiding to make them a good choice for a display, and they're certainly pretty. I'm still in the planning phase, and I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. I'm just looking for basic care info, housing, temperment, and things like that. I haven't decided what kind of carpet I would like, either (still trying to figure out what's what, actually) so I'm researching all of them at this point. I would really appreciate any help/input you can give.

Thanks,
Shelly

Thanks. That cleared up alot of things. I'm leaning towards and Irian Jaya now. I like the look and the size is perfect for me. So does Irian Jaya Carpet = New Guinea Carpet = Papuan Carpet?

Thanks,
Shelly

The Island they come from is called New Guinea, The eastern half is called Papua, and the western half was formally called Irian Jaya, but here not to long ago they changed the name to Western Papua....

99% of the carpets from New Guinea are going to be Irian Jaya/Western Papuan, Many people still call them Irian Jaya Carpet Pythons, but some have started calling them Western Papuan Carpet Pythons....but they are the same thing...There are very few people that work with Papuan carpets, as exporting from the eastern half of that country is not done...so they are very rare...and if you see one being advertised be aware..not many people work with them....but people still import Carpet Pythons from the Western Half of the country...and almost all the ones for sale are going to be Irian Jaya or Western Papuan Carpets...

Hope that helps...
There are many really good breeders that work with Irian Jaya/Western papuan carpets...I highly suggest getting one that is well start and is captive US born and Bred...makes the whole experience tons better...but I am sure you know that if you ever had to work with Bush Baby Ball Pythons(fresh imported baby balls)..can be harder to get going than a healhty captive bred one..lol

Thanks! That really helped. Now it's starting to make sense. I'm definitely planning on getting one that's captive bred. My CB ball pythons are so much easier than imports.

Thanks again,
Shelly

I was alomst going to try...but I figured that they had already made thier mind up on those Brown Carpets...lol

But if you haven't already gotten one of those earth toned snakes...I highly suggest getting a Jungle Carpet, they are way more visually stimulating...

Maybe I'll have to get one of each . I was torn between the Irian Jayas and the Jungles, but the IJ won because I love the IJ Jags. I was only gonna get one Ball Python, though, and we all know how well that works, lol. Now I have 13 plus this year's eggs (I don't own just one of anything - I may be just a little bit obsessive).
