birdhou53 Aug 17, 2003 09:39 AM

hey guys.....when i read care sheets for corn snakes, they dont really say how much snakes poo or stuff like that....so i got like 2 or 3 questions hehe

1. how often do corn snakes poo and do corn snakes smell? =P

2. if they poo, i just scoop up the poo right? i wont need to clean the whole tank right?

3. how often will i need to give the tank a full scrubbing? anyone here know a "home made" formula that is great for disinfecting snake aquariums?

hehe thanks guys :D

They usually "poo" three to seven days after eating. Depends on size of snake, size of meal and temps.
Corn snakes, themselves, do not stink. Their waste can stink but they do not. If you have a corn snake that stinks there is something wrong.

Just check your enclosure daily and scoop out or remove any waste you find. Also remove sunbstrate close enough to be soiled.
You do not need to clean the whole enclosure.

This is just my opinion..which doesn't count for much, but as long as you keep the substrate fresh and remove waste in a timely manner you can get by with doing a complete disinfecting clean maybe twice a year.
The simplest formula for me (turtle tanks especially)is two cups of bleach per gallon of water. Clean and scrub with bleach solution, rinse thoroughly and let sit for 24 hours then rinse again. The chlorine in bleach will disipate in 24 hours. The second rinse is to remove any residue that might not have been removed with the first rinse.

They can sometimes spread it out over a couple of days. They can poop one day, you clean it up and think your done and look the next day and there is more...LOL

Some prefer to go in their water dishes. Although this can be a little gross it can also make cleaning a lot easier.
Some seem to want to "hide" it. They will go behind a rock or in a corner or behind their water dish, somewhere you have to hunt to find it.

Hi, I asked a similar question in the general snake forum. I'm new to this web site and new to the world of reptile parenting.

My baby corn poops a lot! After feeding him I'll leave him alone for a couple of days but as soon as I start handling him. BAM, poop every day, until about a day before the next feeding. I feed him once/week. No one thought that sounded abnormal. I also found out that the consistancy should be very runny when they are babies. The snake doesn't smell but his excrement does.

So, my snake tends to eliminate when he's handled but if he does it in his tank he'll go somewhere away from his den.

I can usually tell when he's about to go because I can actually see a thickness in his body up to where the vent is and then the tail is much thinner. Ihe suddenly becomes very still...watch out.

When I handle my snakes I always check to see if they have a bulge close to vent. If they do I am very very careful and usually put them back before they have a chance to "decorate" my clothing or floor.
