Bad Luck this Season (pics)

carl3 Jun 17, 2007 04:27 PM

What was supposed to be my best year ever turned out not-so-good. I managed to produce 1 clutch of amels and snows plus I still have a clutch from a lavender female and 3 eggs from one of my bairds due to hatch. Next year I am removing water bowls completely (no matter how small) as most of my females managed to ruin their eggs by laying them directly in the water...ugh. I also wanted to give some females a year off BUT they decided to lay (bad) eggs anyway DESPITE not being with a male for over a year!! My pine snake went egg bound and was dangerously close to needing vet care. Furthermore, I lost a virgin 7 yr old female Green Tree Python and two breeder male Columbians (het Albino) whose partners had plans other than breeding. Finally, my female BRB gave birth prematurely....but I may have 3 survivors so its not a total loss. Other than that...I had about another half dozen dwarf boas that simply did not breed. Anyone who says breeding snakes is easy, hasn't had a bad year yet! lol. Well...I guess it's the familiar morphs that keep ya going...oh...and to keep things in perspective...everything has eaten first attempt so far this season (knock on wood)

last but not least...my little helper...she loves snakes but LOVES baby mice even more...wait till she figures out their fate

geeze, and I thought I had it bad. I have just had a lot of slugs and eggs lost due to a certain product that was used during breeding season.
But you, have had it far worse. Guess you take first place on the list of us that have had a bad season. Is anyone else noticing there are quite a few of us having it rough? lol.

Hope everyone's seasons improve.

It's been hit and miss for me too with corns. The trick is to have good proven males. The younger males are the ones that sometimes produce duds. Either they don't have the punch or they are too inexperience to hook up. Also certain strains do better than other. Last year my amel blood reds produce all duds. This year I bred my hypo lav male to the female amel blood red and got a decent clutch. Should be some cool quad hets!. But my butter that laid a great clutch last year produce infertiles this year. Go figure? Try different males and different breedings to see what works best. Good luck! Remember the road to success was paved by failures....
