Help Me Please!

lilyofthethorns Jun 17, 2007 09:55 PM

I recently resuced a lizard ( I think he is a bearded dragon but I'm not 100%) and he has no eyes. He was attacked by three crows and I guess they pecked out his eyes. He is alive and seems to move around fine, but I can not get him to eat! I had crickets in the cage with him for a while and he hasn't eaten any of them. So I bought him some meal worms. He doesn't like being held but I held a meal worm in front of his mouth but he would not eat it, so then I held a piece of lettuce in front of his mouth and he still wouldn't eat. I don't know if he is drinking or not, I haven't seen him drink at all. But since he seems overall healthy I do not want him starving to death when he has three different things he can eat all around him!

Please, I need tips on to how to get him to eat!

What a shame ! First we would hav eot see a pic or get a better description to know WHAT you have, so we know what he would need to eat and temps he would need.

And even though you say he is perfectly healthy other than the eyes being pecked out, he surely is not in good condition right now, must be super stressed, in shock, and may not want to eat right now.
I would let him settle a bit then since he may be blinded you will be taking on a big job of hand feeding this guy whatever he is. If he is truely blinded he will nedd help to eat and drink always. You can use an eyedropper and squeeze small amounts of water in the side of his mouth slowwly as not to choke or drown him. Or drip drips on his snout to see if he will lick it off.
And when you find out what type of lizard you will better know what type of food he will eat, you may have to open his mouth (gently) and push food in.

And remember a VET visit seems to be in order here, he may need medicine for infection if he's been bitten or injured (his eyes)
Soemtimes when they are sick or injured they have a third eyelid that comes down over the eye and looks strange, maybe he has not had his eyes pecked out, hope not.

I would have him looked at asap. Please let us know how you make out and what you have. Thats sad that happened

Thank you very much for replying! You were right about the eyelid thing! One day I noticed that he had his left eye! I still don't know about his right one, but it doesn't look good! It has a weird covering over it. It doesn't look like an eyelid, and if it were I would think he would open it like his left eye.

And he is eating! He is eating crickets all by himself. Infact he is quite the pig =P lol. He loves being sprayed with mist, so I do that everyday for him.

It would still be hard for a one eyed lizard to live in the wild right? Because he wouldn't be able to stay safe on both sides.

Have you tried tickling him on the nose with the things you are trying to feed him?

You could syringe-feed him for a while.

How are his eyes? Any sign of infection? Does he act like a normal beardie except that he can't see?
