New owner- It's not eating???

mdd Jun 18, 2007 08:17 AM

We just purchased a baby Leo this past Friday. It's skittish and hisses often when we try to touch it or go into the cage. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out if its eating. A couple of the crickets appear to be missing. He may have munched on 1 meal worm(dusted with vit/calcium powder). There's been no waste to clean up and I'm concerned it's not doing well...

So--How much should a baby--not sure how old--eat? ( I realize I should have asked and wil be calling store today). I want to make sure it stays well. Should I leave food out all day or just feed when I turn the lights out. Conditions in the tank are good- heat/humidity fine, he has a humid place to hide out.

Perhaps its still getting used to us?

thanks
mdd

He just needs time to adjust. I would suggest that you feed him in the evening time and give him some privacy. Leo's in general need time to adjust to new surroundings and he seems to be no different than any other at this time. As he is a baby i would suggest feeding him 5 crickets (Small ones) and then leave him be. Check the following day to see how many are missing and please refrain from handling him to much at this stage until he adjusts. Meal worms are also an ideal food so try him on them if he isnt eating any crickets. Also make sure he has enough hides on the cool and warm side. The quicker he feels more comfortable the easier he will eat.

baby leos will hiss and occasionally scream when you attempt to hold them. dont worry this is just a phase and you should pursist and it will get used to you. feed it as many crickets as it can eat in 20 mins (this can range from 10 to 20!)
