Baby jungles

eric27 Jun 18, 2007 08:21 AM

The jungles started comming out yesterday. When they do fully emerge, what are the steps I should take? should they be rinsed, seperated, removed from the eggs which have not hatched?.....also, when should I start to feed?
Thanks very much, and don't worry...pics are on the way!

This was the first year for me too. I'd suggest manually pipping any unhatched egg after 24 hrs. As far as the others, once mine emerged, I moved them directly into shoebox tubs w/ paper towel for substrate. I misted them to keep the humidity up until their first shed which was in about a week. I started feeding attempts w/ rat pinks and fuzzy mice within the week after. All but 2 of my babies have eaten after about six weeks, and all but one has shed. Hope this helps, and read, read, read! Any information you can find can be valuable

Could I not just leave the snakes to open the eggs for themselves? fell finda nervous about pipping. also, is there an easy way to sex the snakes?

The rationale behind manual pipping is that any babies which are 'borderline' strong enough to make it out of the egg, won't be prevented from doing so. I pip usually, but more out of impatience than anything. Probably not neccesary, but not a problem either. Try not to snip blood vessels.

Start feeding trials before the first shed. Start (and stick with) rat pinks.

Be sure the neos have perches, high humidity, and hide oppurtunities.

Sexing carpets IMO is best done when they are 24-72 hours old by 'popping'. I don't recommend probing small carpets, generally.

The quicker you get the seperated and established the better, but many keepers keep them together for the first week or so.

Congrats!!!!!!! Take lost of pics, and keep your best ones!

Your hands will probably shake the first time you do it, but it gets easier. "Reproductive Husbandry of Pythons and Boas" gives details on how to do it safely, or see what you can find online to make sure you do it right. Most importantly, keep the tip of the scissors pointed up away from the neonate inside. Good luck!
