What should i expect?

Kholt Aug 17, 2003 10:32 AM

I have had a male mali for about 8 months now and i really like him. I like him so much that i decided to get him a girlfriend. What should i be on the look out for when adding a female? They seem to get along ok so far, but she keeps nippiong at him. Even though my male is way bigger, the new female pushes him around big time. He is a little chicken. Anyways, any advice would be helpful, thanks.

Uromastyx females don't seem to worry about the fact that they are smaller than the males. My ornate female nipped at and chased my male for months. I had to separate them twice for several weeks, rearrange the cage furniture and reintroduce her, so she felt (I hoped, anyhow) that it was a "new" place and HIS territory. If he doesn't lose weight (assuming he's full grown) and she doesn't cause any actual wounds leave them alone to sort it out on their own. If he loses weight or actually gets injured, separate them and try the above. -Lucy

my male, easily half again as big as either of my females, is the same way. the girls push him around big time, especially the first couple of days after being introduced. watch out for any real signs of aggression (like serious nipping) and just give them a day or two, once they establish a pecking order they'll be fine.
