2 balls 1 cage

I've got 1 male about a year old and 1 female, a baby. I've had the male in a tank probably too big for him, but i just seperated it into 2 sections and put the baby female in. Now they are seperated by a wall of cardboard, but will they smell each other and not breed when time comes? Thanks for any input.

Separating is the best choice, I would use something other than cardboard they are strong enough to bend if they want. I would not worry about them smelling each other. As long as the both have hot and cold sides and a strong divider they should be good.

I have a 55 gallon the I split in two. I used a piece of plexi glass and aquarium sealant. If you do this I'd give it at least a few days to air out, that stuff is pretty strong smelling.
