green & grey tree frog *help*

oscar_kiwi Aug 17, 2003 12:20 PM

I have a green and grey tree frog in a tank together (I know I shouldnt do that but its all the store had and they get along fine) and either of them use the water im putting in the tank. I mist them frequently, does that mean they dont need it? My tank has a very crumbly dirt in it and it gets all over them, (my GTF is constantly kicking her legs to get rid of it) and they STILL wont use the water. I've had them a week, is this too soon to be worrying?

Oh one more thing- my cricks recently laid eggs in a wet paper towel and there is a LOT of eggs there... do all of them hatch? I dont have enough room to hold them all!

Thanks-
Christina

Hi Christina,

Green and gray tree frogs generally do alright together as long as they are around the same size and kept in a large cage. Both green and gray tree frogs are nocturnal and soak in their water dish at night. You often don't see them in it but you can tell they were soaking by the dirt leftover in the water the next morning. They should always have access to clean, dechlorinated water even if it doesn't look like they are using it.

What substrate are they being kept on? Some soil mixtures seem to stick to frogs no matter what you do. Avoid using soil mixtures with sand in them because of that. Good luck,

There is a lot of soil left behind in the water so that answers my question.... I cant remember the brand of it but it was the kind you buy in a block for reptiles & let soak in water and it expands. I dont know if it has sand in it, it does feel gritty, but should I change anyways? The pet store clerk said I should use that but I've heard they don't know what they're talking about! hehe

Thanks a lot
Christina

oh and about my cricket eggs, do they need any extra care by me other than keep the paper towel wet? I've already fed the female cricket to froggies so they're on their own...

Sounds like your substrate is Bed a Beast or some other form of cocoa fiber. That is the best to keep them on. It doesn't have anything in it that will harm your frogs and can easily be passed if accidentally swallowed during feeding.

As for the cricket eggs, I don't know but I just might have to put some wt paper towel in my bin and see if mine will breed. Would be nice to not have to go and buy some every week. (Can't keep large numbers of them because of an ant problem I have in my apartment)

Gray treefrogs secrete a toxic substance, but I don't know if it affects other frogs or not. And make sure they are almost exactly the same size or one will try to eat the other.

Also, what size tanks are you keeping them in? You seem to be pretty new at all this, so the people here can help you take the best care of them if you let us know a little more
