Interesting I bought him from a pet store owner that I knew very well in York, PA I am not 100% sure he is a male I recall him sexing him but it was just so long ago and sadly he might be older then 7yrs since I didn’t get him as a yearling. I would love to breed the little guy as I never seen any patterns like him but he has always been a pet. If he isn’t too old and whiling I will certainly breed him. He is a great eater and takes F/T..

That is an interesting looking cal king. Where did it come from?

RossCA Jun 20, 2007 08:08 PM

Awesome looking king. That thing is huge and very light brown. Some snake hunters don't think they are hypomelanistic but they might be. They make up a small percentage of the over all population in coastal San Diego County. Here's one I found there a few months ago.

To find such an awesome king while out hunting!?
Those super light brown (dare I say hypo) Cal's are the best!!

Nice find man. Very nice. I'd give my left.... Well, I'd really dig finding one like that.

Ha ha ha Thanks. If you could flip that ADULT king during the driest season ever recorded, you can find anything.

That is a nice looking WC snake!! The WC is a darker brown then mine and the pattern on the head is somewhat different I would love to breed this guy with another of this type of color/pattern, when I purchased him he was sold as Chocolate Cal King, but I have also seen them as Lavender online, what are they labeled as now?

RossCA Jun 21, 2007 02:11 PM

Thanks, I think(?)they're the same color phase going by your pictures. Those pictures I posted were taken in my shadow. Here's one in the light.

This king is not the blue eyed blond morph, if your king is still lighter than this then maybe it's a blue eyed blond morph. You can find pictures of that morph at this link to compare yours to. http://www.vividreptiles.com/psj/blond.html

GabooNx Jun 21, 2007 05:01 PM

Yes it must be the lighting or the angle or perhaps the blond picture help me see the difference but he looks more like your WC then the blond. I will grab some better photos tomorrow and get some more of your opinions. One question what is this type of snake called? Chocolate Cal.?

RossCA Jun 22, 2007 03:53 AM

There's no name for them that I'm aware of. You could call it a light phase chocolate Cal king. I really do wonder if they are hypo but it's hard to say because kings of all shades of brown can be found in the same local but these do make up a small percentage. You can find out if you breed him to a normal.

I would say it looks like a hypomelanistic cal king to me. There are many types of hypo and the only way to tell if yours is one would be to breed it and see what happens.

Here are some hypo pics.

Thanks a lot bro. I've learned a lot from the forums and Hubbs. Also, getting out there in the field has helped a lot too.
