West Texas Coleonyx?

thekidgecko Jun 20, 2007 01:15 PM

Hey all, long time no see. I've been on the poison dart frog forums for a while

So basically my question is how the heck do you find these guys??? A summer or two ago, I spent nearly a week cruising like crazy from Langtry, to Del Rio, and down to Eagle Pass. The only thing I found that whole trip was a night snake under a mattress at a flea market (They make neat pets though!) I usually cruised around 9pm on basically deserted roads along whatever habitat I could find. I cruised all night and flipped all day...

Any tips for finding some brevis this summer? I have family in Odessa so I have sort of an "outpost" to travel down to from Dallas. Any places/roads closer to there that have a reasonable population of geckos would be awesome, as I am limited to 2-3 cruising days total. I'm a hard core Eublepharid man, and I have some space on my herp shelf for a couple more tanks

Thanks,

Mason

Just saw that HB12 was signed in recently I'm really !@#$%^. Anyone know of any ranches that might let me look around, as well?

Hey there, have you tried flipping larger flat rocks. I found a C.Brevis on the 9th of this month in Brewster County north of Study Butte Tx. I lifted a rock during the day and found him. I took a few photos and released him back under the rock.

Yeah, tried tin, rocks, trash, mattresses, and anything else I saw. Guess I was just unlucky X| I actually met a mobile home salesmen in Del Rio who said he ripped his mothers shed down the week before and there were 10+ bandeds under it. That was great to hear after zero luck lol!

I'll definitely try that area. Thank you!

C. brevis aren't found on roads as often as the western species, in my experience.

I have found most of the brevis I have seen flipping rocks and even trash (flat fence slats, tin, etc). I have found them quite common in some areas of south TX and even in Val Verde county.

Also ,I can remember two years ago on the River road, fm 170 that we saw about 5 C.brevis in one pass . I don't keep any lizards/gecko's so we just cruised on by.
