good spots near marietta or atlanta ga?

tokaysrnice Jun 20, 2007 04:22 PM

I'm heading down south for a wedding and have about four days to kill in my two week stay. I'm really interested in photographing some canebrakes, copperheads and maybe some eastern diamonds. I hope to get bit by a few eastern coachwhips and some black racers. and maybe observing some southern pines. any ideas within a couple hours of atlanta would be greatly appreciated

There's lots of good herping around GA, but at this time of year it is going to be done primarily on roads at night.

Also, the species you asked for are highly sought after and unfortunately still killed for roundups in GA, so people aren't likely to put you on their good spots for Diamondbacks and Canebrakes.

Also, AFAIK, Diamondbacks and Canebrakes aren't going to be common around ATL. You will need to get further down towards the coast (either one).

Isn't it amazing that a state that won't let you keep a plethora of non-venomous snakes can still hold round ups supporting the killing of native treasures for "education". I think us herpers need to hold a "drunk redneck swerving to hit "any animal, reptile or not" roundups" to "educate" people. No offense to any drunk redneck herpers. Sorry i could go on and on so i better not start now.

Anyhow I am still gonna look anywhere I go and for some reason I tend to find my species of interest so I have my fingures crossed. Now it looks like I might head up to Indiana and pass through kentucky hopefully herping along the way. Last year i went to indy and had the good fortune of finding Two Queen snakes, A plains ringneck, A couple five lined skinks, and a ton of banded water snakes all in the only day i had to herp between the indy 500 and the cubs game. This year looks like I will have some more time to actually spend looking for herps.

Has anyone been to the Kentucky reptile zoo and if so is it worth checking out?

Anymore info would be appreciated
