who's breeding pancakes?

mythreetorts Jun 20, 2007 07:45 PM

was wondering who is involved with pancakes? preptiles? Iknow you mention it on your web site.

I have thought about starting a group but want to make sure I am ready for them with all of the input I can gather. i whave been to all the sites and read all the pages and articles. I even print them out and have them i n a binder for reference but I want to know from the people doing it now.

with a reproductive system so slow (or should I say few) how do some breeders offer so many for sale? do they just have dozens of females? How many pancake torts (0.0) do you all have and what kind of numbers do you get for eggs/ babies. and do they lay all year and how many times will you typically get and egg in a year?
Tons of questions I know but they have got to be the most interesting, half way affordable torts out there.

thanks for replies there is not a lot of talk here about pancakes.

JUST CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF ONE ANOTHER
I HAVE A SMALL GROUP
2 FEMALES LAID 3 EGGS EACH LAST YEAR
FIRST TIME LAYING FOR ME AND I FOUND THE EGGS IN TIME
THEY JUST LAY THEM DARN EGGS ANYWHERE
NO HOLE
THEY LIVE IN ROCKS IN THE WILD AND I HAVE FOUND EGGS IN BETWEEN THE ROCK PILE A FEW TIMES
ONE FEMALE LAID ALL HERS RIGHT OUTSIDE THE HUT 3 TIMES IN A ROW
THEY ARE LIKE LITTLE EASTER BUNNIES
NONE WERE FERTILE
THEY ARE SUPER EASY TO MAINTAIN
JUST WATCH OUT FOR HIGH HUMIDITY
THEY ARE INPORTED IN VERY HIGH NUMBERS
MOST FEMALES LAY AFTER THEY ARE IMPORTED
YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE BULDGE IN THE TORTOISE BEFORE THEY LAY
VERY COOL
THEY ARE VERY HARDY COMPARED TO OTHER HIGH END SPECIES BUT REPRODUCE IN VERY SMALL NUMBERS
3 EGGS A YEAR WITH ONE FEMALE IS A GREAT YEAR FOR ME
I THINK WHEN THEY ARE IMPORTED THEY SIT ON THEM FOR A FEW MONTHS AND KEEP THE EGGS THEN SELL THE ADULTS OFF IN TRIOS AND PAIRS
POOF THEY HAVE CAPTIVE BORN PANCAKES
THIS IS DONE ALOT IN THE INDUSTRY
SAD PART IS UNLESS THEY ARE TREATED WITH PANACUR OR OTHER MEDICATIONS THEY OFTEN DIE VERY QUICKLY
I DID ORAL INJECTIONS WITH MEDS FOR A FEW WEEKS WHEN I GOT SOME ON A TRADE FOR KINGSNAKES
I ONLY LOST ONE MALE
I HAVE DONE THIS FOR ALL WC TORTOISES I HAVE RECIEVED AND HAVE HAD GOOD RESULTS
I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE 20 FEMALES BUT
IT WOULD BE A VERY LARGE SCALE PROJECT TO MAKE A SAFE ENCLOSURE FOR THAT MANY PANCAKES OUTSIDE
THEY DO NOT HAVE A CHANCE IF SOMETHING BITES ONE IT'S OVER
SO I MUST KEEP THEM IN AN OUTDOOR TORTOISE TABLE WITH A SCREEN LID
I HAVE NEVER HAD ANYONE TRY AND SELL ME REAL C.B. BABIES YET
JUST WC ADULTS
I HAVE SEEN A FEW BABIES AT TRADE SHOWS
THATS IT
NOT ENOUGH MONEY IN IT FOR MOST BREEDERS I THINK FOR WHAT YOU GET BACK
I JUST LOVE EM AND WOULD BE VERY PROUD TO HATCH ANY OUT
IF EVERYBODY PROPAGATED A LITTLE GROUP WE COULD STOP THE COLLECTING OF THE ADULTS
HOPE THIS HELPS A LITTLE

thanks for the info again Jeff. I will be looking for some in the early spring or late winter and will probably try for a trio. is that what you said you had? I too think they are very fasinating. now I know they need low humidity but how much water do they need? regular soakings or just a dish in the pen? and do you feed them Mazuri and regular desert tort grasses?
don't forget we need to hook up on those greeks. I'll Email the store

later, Chris

Quite a few people.

Most breeders don't even post here on Kingsnake.
