jack Jun 20, 2007 08:36 PM

The turtles had a feast of wild mushrooms and Mulberries today. They ate so much I’m afraid that they will be overfed.

How do you know what mushrooms are ok for them, or can they eat any of them? I wish my guys would try something non-animal for once.

Here's my torts, though, eating wild blackberries! My daughter says they look like they have been murdering!

mushrooms have been discussed before, if you look back through the posts you should find the threads.
I leave it up to my turtles to decide which mushrooms are safe for them, they know better than I do.

It has been through trial and error that I have come to know the type of wild mushroom they like. I have noticed that before they eat it they will poke their nose into to it. It seems that they can smell if it’s a good one to eat. The ones they seem to like best here in NJ grow mostly under oak trees after a rain. They will have a thick white stem and pure white gills on the under side, The top can be Red-Pink to Purple to Brown.

Well, it's been raining for three days. I saw some nice mushrooms when I was driving out this morning. Since they loved the blackberries, I'll try them on mushrooms this evening!
