Indigo behavior question

bezzacat Jun 21, 2007 06:01 AM

Hi guys, I am a new indigo keeper just purchased a 06 male. I am not new to the hobby and have kept several non beginner snakes in the past. As I am sure you all know Drys behave in a unique fashion that I am currently learning. When I hold my snake he takes deep breaths and I can hear him exhale almost like a puffing sound. Is he being defensive or is it just a unique snake thing to him? He isn't showing any other defensive behaviors ie. jerky movements, pulling his head back defensively or wiggling his tail. He wiggles his tail sometimes when he sees us from inside his tank but he stops when he is picked up. He is in a 40 gal tank, aspen substrate which I make sure is clean, large water dish, hide. The tank is kept in a room that ranges from 73 to 78 degrees it is by a window where he gets indirect sunlight so I don't use a heat lamp for him. Besides the puffing issue which may be perfectly fine he seems very happy.

Its called Huffing. I asked the same question years ago. Indigos seem to do it when excited. Just one of the great trade marks of Drymarchon..

It's normal, but scares the hell out of the unsuspecting.

Welcome to the club and enjoy your new friend!

Your telling me lol, I thought he was agitated. If you own a snake you have to accept the fact that you will probably get bit at some point but you still don't want to take a shot from a snake like a Dry if you don't have too. I have been spending lots of time with him and he is simply wonderful. My wife and I love the Dry personality, they always like to keep an eye on you to see what you are doing.
