First Time Parents - Surprise Clutch

graham799 Jun 21, 2007 06:57 AM

I considered breeding red tails so did some research. Everything I read stated to keep the male and female separate until breeding time. Basically is the two are raised together they think they're brother and sister and won't breed. Then there's the issue of temperature and humidity that has to be perfect. Once the female is pregnant I read she won't feed. Well have I got a story for you....

Apparently raising them together and keeping them in a comfortable (but not high) warm humid environment is NOT birth control. As for eating - she ate last week. Last night we were floored by finding she (Rita) had given birth. And we thought she was just putting on weight! We have 20 babies... all alive and moving.

So now that we're here - first time parents - I've got a few questions. I posted on the breeding and health area of the forum, but thought of a couple more questions.

(1) A couple of the snakes were slow to move in their sacks so we kind rubbed them a little to get them moving. They seem fine now. Is that a good thing to do? Or would they have been okay anyway?

(2) There were two orange pods. Was this the placenta? I know a "slug" is an underdeveloped baby. I can't imagine that's what the orange thing was.

(3) Any other advice to a first-timer?

Thanks so much!

Orange things are slug's.Take the babies place them in a rubbermaid box or something and line the bottom of it with moist paper towles. weep them warm and moist next few days till there cords come off.

Animals don't recognize familial boundaries for breeding. That was a ludicrous theory.

We know that now!
