Mealworms, waxworms, ect.

CollardGuy Aug 17, 2003 02:14 PM

K. Can Collared lizards digest mealworms without problems? (I have heard that Beardies cannot.) What about Waxworms? I am asking because fall aproaches and I currently do not buy food, I am wondering (and I know I am probably going to get fifty opinions, thats ok though, I need them.) what you guys do for food, what do you feed, anybody have trouble with any particular food, anything? Where are the best crickets coming from? Is it okay to feed them waxworms fairly often? (I've heard they have abnormally high fat content.) Also, a 20 gal long is big enough for two collareds right? (I have read about that somewhere, but its been a while.) The pet store has some, but theyr'e $50! Thats all I have, I can't aford bigger, and I can't bring the current cage inside. Are they supposed to cost that much?

Ive never had any problems feeding mealworms or waxworms to any lizard, collareds and beardies included. Though feeding too mayn mealworms, or superworms, often causes them to be regurgitated.
Waxworms ive never seen regurgitated, but then again, i onyl use them for snacks (once a week, maybe once everyother week) since they are fatty if im not mistaken. No, a 20gallon tank should not cost $50, unless it was specially built, or on of theose "reptitanks" which are nothing but normal 20gallon tanks with a built in lid that always breaks. Check your local lewspaper classifieds and you might be able to find a nice big tank for an affordable price.

Thanks, I didn't think they should cost that much. I will try to find garage sale ads or something, which section of the classifieds do you think I would find them in? I have looked but I have never found.

...I don't really have the time to cruise all the yard sales, but we 'sub it out' to some people that spend a lot of Saturdays doing just that. They have a standing notice to call us up if they see any aquariums etc. being offered anywhere. The last batch I got was a 55, a 30 breeder, and a 20 tall for $45.00, and a 125 for another $50. Pays to look around a bit!

But I got my 90 Gallon for 50 dollars. I don't know how often you can find a deal like that. All I know is once I got the 90 gallon in the basement I kinda said to myself that it never leaves.

Its got the 1/2 inch glass, so it weighs a LOT

...thickness, weighs a ton it seems. I was going to put it upstairs....But there's this one turn at the top landing I don't think I can get it around LOL. Long AND heavy! Soon as I get more of the 40's upstairs in the Savannah Park, I'll set it up & park it somewhere DOWNSTAIRS!

....for collareds."
Mine are mostly in 40's now, but I want to set the Utah's up in a thing similar to what I did for the Savannahs. It really only cost about $60 in materials, with all the stuff like the glass and mellamime being *scrounged up* LOL. My TX CB's get dibs on the 125.

Wax worms do have a very high fat content but i don't know how bad that is for collareds?, for feeder nutritional info go to http://www.grubco.com/Nutritional_Information.cfm , you can build a cage 6'x2'x2' of plywood and pleixiglass for $60.-$70., 20gal is OK but bigger IS better LOL, check-out the "want-add press" if they have it in your area, it's good your starting to look now, good luck! - jim

What do you guys think about waterfalls? Do they put out to much humidity?

When i had anole i used both one i bought premade, and one i made myself. In my opinion, they are not worth the cleaning up involved. For some reason, the pumps on both always became clogged (dead crikets sometimes, usually small rocks that i used for substrate) stopping the water.
Also, its much cheaper to buy the expanding foam at a craft store, and then buy the pump (craft stores sell them, i got ine at a yard sale from a used fountain.) and make the waterfall yourself.
