Egg mixing?? are there any problems??

KingCobra Jun 21, 2007 03:13 PM

This year, I had two wild-caught snakes lay eggs within three days of each other. One is a GB Gopher Snake and the other is Yellow-Bellied Racer.

I was wondering if it poses any problems at all to put all of the eggs in the same incubator.

Here is a pic of the incubator and eggs:

The only issue you can get into is if the eggs hatch at the same time, one of the babies could eat the other. However, since baby snakes almost never eat straight out of the egg, I think you will be OK.

The other concern would be one species hatching sooner and disturbing the other eggs by burrowing around in the medium. You can reduce the chances of this by putting a couple of hideboxes in the incubator so they can hide without burrowing.

What are you going to do with baby YB Racers anyway?

Thanks for the info. I will probably keep one or two of the baby racers and let the others go near where I caught the mother.

Near hatching time, I will put some small hides in the incubator. Also I will have to put the incubator bin into a larger enclosure because I have had babies get out before, but found them nearby.
