crestie care requirements?

uropat Aug 17, 2003 02:50 PM

Hi,
I was wondering what the care requirements for crested geckos are. I was thinking of getting one or two at a show n october. I want a lizard that is ok for handeling and has simple (at least fairly simple) habitat needs, and does not mind being held. I would love to see some pics of poeples geckos and/or cages. Thanks in advance.

Cresteds are very simple.
No special heat, no special lamps,
fairly minimal cage size (15 gallon aquarium is great)
and you can feed crickets and baby food, or
the Crested Gecko Diet.

My care sheet is not available yet, but the other Mike on this
board has a really great multimedia care guide, I am sure he will be posting soon to give you the link for it. It covers most of the basics, and then if you have more questions, feel free to ask.

I know you dont have one yet, but when you find out what great pets they are, you will....so in advance, let me be the first to welcome you to the Crested World.

Hi i had a crested gecko for a year when i first had him i kept him temporaraly in a 10gallon plastic cage, which he seemed to be okay with.in there he just had a climbing branch and a toilet paper tube(plus a food and a bath/water dish). I have two now, i set up a 20 gallon tall tank for the big one. the little one is now in the small cage until she gets bigger. in the large cage i put a fish tank stone hiding place that is big enough for him and the other one(once she's in there) plus a plastic commercal cave and a hollow log. i also put one of the fake vines across it(the kind with the sucktion cups on the end) and a fake tree. all they seem to really need(at least the one i have) is to be misted every night and to have a hiding place or two and something to climb on. mine prefer toilet paper tubes as hiding places even though i have hollow logs and caves for them. they also are easy to feed-not at all picky, mine eat baby food with crickets or they will eat meat baby food or commercial food.WARNING-these are very addictive lizards! so you can start out with one or two but you'll end up with more!(i just got the other one yesterday ) they also are very personable(at least mine is). he likes me and whenever i put my hand in his cage(as long as hes not asleep) he will come over lick my fingers and climb up my arm and perch on my shoulder. he likes one of my dads coworkers who keeps reptiles alot, and after he gets to know other people is friendly to them too. however it took my mother some extra time for him to get used to from what ive heard the young ones are more skidish and harder to handle- as i said I dont know much Ive only had one for a year and a second for a day but there are lots of caresheets on line if you search for them. good luck with your crested!
