Cher's First Slug

nategodin Jun 22, 2007 08:12 AM

Cher completed her pre-lay shed last weekend, so I gave her a nest box a couple days ago, hoping to get some eggs within the next week or two. I was very surprised to find this slug in her box this morning... actually, I thought it was two slugs at first; it was so poorly calcified that it was folded in half. Hopefully she'll lay some good ones soon! Slugs are usually laid before and/or after fertile eggs, right?

Thanks,
Nate

Nate:

I've had a Honduran do that to me before - lay a slug a few days after the pre-egg lay shed. She then laid her full clutch about a week later like everything was normal.

I've had slugs both at the beginning and at the end of a clutch but it's usually difficult to tell because looking at a pile of eggs how can you tell the order laid?

Glad your black milks are getting ready for eggs. Mine seem to be a bit behind this year - breeding but no obvious swelling and nowhere near pre-egg lay shed yet. The Hondurans are a whole other sitation. Got my third clutch this morning!
