How Young Is Too Young?

5yearstooyoung Jun 22, 2007 05:03 PM

I just got a baby gecko through a breeder but it died less than 24 hours after I got it. I fed it, watered it, kept it at the right temperature. (I've had cresteds before)
It was only 2 months old &I've never had one that little.
I'm going to drive up next week to get a new one but they're all very young except for one that has a dropped tail.
So I guess my question is is 2months old too young &should I just get the dropped tail one or what should I do?

Sorry to hear the news. I don't think 2 months is two young. As a mater of fact I think it is cool to watch them grow and change color. You do need to give them a bit more care and understand their special needs. Shedding is an issue with young Cresteds so it is even more important to keep them misted and look for and solve shed problems. I also would be careful with substrates. I generally don't use natural substrates until 5 or six months. I am concerned about them eating some, especially while chasing crickets. I also watch their food intake very closely at that age and provide at least some sort of food every day. When you only weigh 2 of 3 grams you don't have much to loose safely. I am not suggesting that any of these things lead to your loss, this is just a list of items to watch. You might check with the breeder you bought it from, most offer health guarantees of some sort. I know we do. Good luck.

Thanks, that helped a lot. &the breeder said I can either come and get a new one or have it shipped again so I'm just going to drive up this time.
Thanks again!

If the gecko died with in 24 hrs of you receiving it there must have been a reason.

Feeding it shouldnt have been an issue unless you fed it something toxic.

The most likely reason (in my opinion) would be either the gecko was injured during shipping, or extremely stressed.
