first nest

phil nj Jun 22, 2007 09:33 PM

The first of my girls finally layed this afternoon. She has been trying for 4 days now. Every afternoon for the past 3 days she has been out and about, even digging a test hole or two. Last night she was starting to dig and we had a severe thunderstorm and she gave up. When I came home from work(6:30PM) she was covering the nest. They usually don't start digging until around 6, so I figured she really wanted to get the eggs out! This is the latest ever for a first nest here. They usually lay the first or second week of june, although I have had a nest at the end of may. My other girl is usually the first one to lay, but nothing yet. We had a real cool wet spring here so thats probably why they are a little behind. Hopefully they keep with the previous years routine and she lays again in 3 weeks.

Good luck! Wish I could have a few more clutchs of baby turtles-but alas my state regs require my turtles to be separated in pens by their gender.

Baby turtles are the cutest things!
