New Black Racer

luvya318 Aug 17, 2003 03:53 PM

My cat recently brought me a 20" black racer home and managed not to injure it. My mother is a school teacher and wanted to keep it in her classroom for her students to study. I was wondering what I should try and feed it. I currently have it in a 20 gallon terrarium with a water bowl, twigs and a hiding place.

Hey,

Black racers as all racer and coachwhips love heat. They need a heat lamp on them 12 hours a day. But make sure the heat lamp is on one side of the cage and not both, as they need a warm and cool spot. You can use pine or aspen shavings, or untreated potting soil. Make sure they have a place to hide, a few fake plants, and clean water dish. They will eat insects, lizards, mice, ect. If you want him to be tame hold him every day for up to 2 weeks. Use gloves if you dont want to be bitten. Usually once they tame they will eat. Best of luck. WILLIAM H. AND THE GREEN PINE MUSEUM.
