Crock Pot and Defrosting Rats ???'s

KTR Jun 23, 2007 03:23 AM

Not too long ago I noticed a post where someone stated they use a crock pot to thaw out and warm up their frozen feeders... I don't remember who posted this but could who ever it was please post some instructions or details about exactly what you do? I have four crock pots and never use any of them. If it will speed up my feedings I'd love to try it.

Thanks, Kaine

Only kidding, DO NOT use a microwave. I never heard of uing a crockpot either though?

I guess it could work.

No way...........crock pots cook things....to defrost rats you just want to thaw them to an unfrozen state .not cook......

anyways...crock pot would just heat the water around the rats till it was all warm and then warm rats till unfrozen.......take like hour or so......

.....hot tap water in a bucket or pan or whatever..I use stainless steel steam table pans........hot water in and rats in and the water will get cold quickly........dump water and add new hot tap water......repeat a couple times......they thaw in 15 minutes if you are attentative and half hour if you don't try real hard at it.......when water stays warm add more hot and they will be like 100 degrees.....make sure rats are warm the whole way to center....and no ice balls are left inside......

........faster with hot water.........

make chicken and BBQ sauce in crock pots........whistle pigs and tomatoe sauce?.........etc etc

Actually if you have a crock pot with a adjustable temp setting and you set it on low it will just keep them worm after they thaw so you don’t have to keep changing the water to keep them at 99-102 f. the temp of a mouse or rats body . So I think it is a grate idea ! David of DS Reptile Rescue

IMO... this would not work. A crock pot is designed to cook slow and steady. If you take a crock pock at whatever temperature, and throw a bunch of frozen rats/mice into it, the water is going to turn cold within minutes if not seconds.

A crock pot is not going to be able to heat that water warm enough to maintain those frozen rats unless you keep the rats in their for hours.. which you don't want to do.

Maybe someone can explain how I'm wrong on this. I would love to know. I'm all about easier dethawing but I don't see how this could possibly work.

I talking about keeping them worm wile you are feeding not to thaw them out with , the problem I have is in keeping them at the right temp. for the time wile I am feeding . I don’t just throw them in the cage and go on , I feed each one and don’t move on until they have eaten ,and yes it is time consuming but I do what I feel is in the best interest of my captives . Thaw them out in the sink or big pot with hot water to thaw them fast . David

What I do is put the frozen rat/rats in a ziplock, and put them in the fridge overnight. Then I take them out of the fridge and place them next to it, and let them become room temperature. I then place them in the sink with hot/warm water, for about 10 min. Then they are ready to go. I would not suggest putting them in the microwave/crock pot, because it could heat them too hot, and burn the inside of your snake. Hope this helps.

In the first place hopefully no one is stupid enough to give a rodent that is hot to the touch to there snake ! They should only feel worm at best . David
