Question on heating a vision

Kicksome123 Jun 23, 2007 08:46 AM

I have a vision cage for my BRB, the smallest they make actually. I was wondering how I could heat this thing, when you buy them they say undertank heating. How does this work you just put the heat pad under the cage and the thermometer probe inside the cage? Im just tired of having a unprofessional looking cage.

when i was using my visions it had a built in heat dome that i put a small 50W heat light in and i put flex watt heat teap underneath same side hooked to my thermostat and the probe is always on the heat tape i used a temp gun to check inside temps and they were at 91 hot side 85 cool of course that was a setup for one of my "pet rocks" as dave would call them lol

What do you mean pet rocks?

I think he is referring to Ball Pythons.

I heard that several months back about BP's and thought it was funny.

I was just wondering if you could put the heat pad under the tank and just have the probe in the tank. Would it be to hot like as to melt the plastic or would it be fine?

You can do that but there are complications like the occupant moving the probe causing temps to rise. Also, can use the probe as a bathroom and would then need cleaning.

I heat my Vision 36 inch cages with 11 inch wide flexwatt placed under one end (nearly a third of the floorspace) of each cage. I use one proportional thermostat wired in series with a dimmer switch to control the flexwatts for 12 cages. The thermostat probe is taped inside the door sill of one cage so that it is about an inch above where the front edge of the flexwatt is under the cage. This keep the probe somewhat out of the way of the snakes and above any mess in the cage. With the proprtional thermostat you nearly always do not get so much power to the heaters that they get real hot but the dimmer switch ensures this and also provides a level of protection in case the thermostat fails in the "on" position. The top cages in the stacks are usually a degree or two warmer than the bottom ones due to the thermal gradient in the room. If this difference was more than I could live with I would use more thermostat and dimmer combinations controlling each level of cages seperately.
