Orange stripes

platinumtlc Jun 23, 2007 01:11 PM

My collared has developed orange stripes, and I've read that that means it is gravid, yet it has been alone in it's enclosure for about a year or so. Before then it had a male with her.

Should I be worried about eggs or no?

She's at least ovulating, and MAY develop eggs but may not - I don't have TOO much experience with them, but the eggs won't be good if she does have them. If you do find a male in your area, maybe the owner will let you breed - no harm checking! good luck!

I don't have enough time to find a male because I'm only home for the weekend, and then i'm back to another place for work. Should I worry about her laying eggs that are good? Is it healthy if she lays eggs that aren't? And anything I should do as a preparation for her possible egg laying?

If she has not been with a male in a year then the eggs would not be fertile. Females retain sperm and can lay a second , 3d clutch from one mating, but not after all that time of being alone.

She is ovualting, so yes she can lay (infertile) eggs and should be given a lay box, or a corner with some dampened sand ( a few inches deep) otherwise she could become eggbound, and that is not good.

She could lay eggs within weeks after seeing the orange. OR she can also reabsorb the eggs and you would evenually after a month or more begin to notice her getting thinner and the orange fading and nothing would happen.

Let us know how she makes out.
