Eggs gone bad?

phiber_optikx Jun 23, 2007 05:45 PM

I have 2-3 eggs out of the group that looked good but are extremely dented in. Actually they are just as dented in as the duds are at this point. Is it common to have a few that look good but just aren't? No other eggs are dented in like these except for the obvious duds.

How far along are you?
Eggs frequently dent a week or so before hatching.

I wouldn't worry about them to much. If the clutch is young - take some moss, soak it in water, wring it out - and put it in the tub. Repeat every couple of days and they may restore their shape.

Just make sure to ring the moss out so it is moist but not wet. What it does - the surface area of the moss allows for evaporation increasing the humidity a touch - often enough for dented eggs to pop back out (unless they are denting in preparation for pipping)

here is what i do..

if the eggs look good.. I take a clean white paper towel, wet it then squeeze out the excess water and lay it on the dented eggs.. in a day or two they will pop back up to shape..

then add a little more water to your incubation medium..

try it .. it works!

What concerns me is that none of the other eggs are doing this but the bad eggs.... I will add moss but I doubt that the humidity is an issue since the sides are covered in water....

A couple did it in one of my tubs - not all of them, a couple. They popped back out.

I wouldn't worry to much though - even if they don't pop back out they still very well may hatch.

I agree. this is what I do. I saved a clutch of eggs that I did not realized had been laid. I estimate the eggs were there for about 2 days. I thought by the severity of the colapsing that I had lost them all. I took a paper towel, got it wet and put it on the eggs. Next day i noticed a major improvement. Second day they were all better.

Yes, I have had eggs that look great in the beginning solidify after a couple weeks of incubation. No idea why good looking eggs go bad in incubation sometimes. They become solid, spongy in the middle, then "deflate".

I almost tossed this egg out. Glad I didn't. It was like this for awhile, and it started to rot. Derek
