Eyes closing....

Longhorn627 Jun 24, 2007 11:16 AM

My BD has been keeping his eyes closed during the day alot the past day and 1/2 I know with chameleons this is not a good sign at all. Is it the same for BD's? He's got good basking heat, cool side, has had several baths/sprays, has been eating and pooping. I have only had him for a week. He is nine inches long. Any ideas would help, thanks in advance.

What are you using for UVB? If you're using the compact fluorescents then that could be your problem. Also too close to a 10.0 sometimes causes this.

3 sides of his enclosure should be solid. Closed eyes can also be a sign of stress. A raised basking area should be supplied too.

I am using a compact reptisun 10.0, I will order a longer tube, also is the 8.0 or 10.0 ideal? What do you mean when you say three sides should be solid? I am guessing you mean non-reflective? Thanks for the help

I'm sure your compact fluorescent is the problem. It has been discussed her in the past. I would stop using it now, and get a replacement at your convenience. If you're going to lay it on the screen then an 8 should be fine. I am a Zoo Med believer on this item and have always used 5.0's with 20 long tanks in the past when laid on the screen but zoo med says to use a 10.0 in this application. With a raised basking area I just feel a 5 is enough. If you pitch the compact fluorescent his eyes should recover in a few days.

Dragons don't like to think they can be attacked from all directions. They feel more secure if they only have to pay attention to one direction. So what I was saying was to just cover 3 sides with paper or a background or something. Even my adults don't like the 2 long sides to be both open. Not much you can do about them seeing their reflection in the glass, except to keep the room brighter.

Thank you. I really appreciate the advice.
