Just moved. Cold basement.

RyanT Jun 24, 2007 02:24 PM

I just moved to a new place this past week. Lots of fun. I have a perfect spare room off of the basement to put my snakes in. However, being the basement, the room temp is only 65 in the middle of the day and it's proving to be very hard to keep the snakes where I like to have them, as far as temperature goes. Anybody ever had this problem? What can I do to fix it? I already blocked off the vent where the central air pumps through at. That did next to nothing. I'm sensing they're not happy and I'm losing sleep over it. It really sucks. This room is perfect. I didn't realize before I signed the lease that it was so "basementy" down there.

You may have to put a dehumidifier in, basements are usually colder because there is moisture, I use one in mine and it is amazing to see the amount of water that i have to dump. Hopefully it should not interfer to much with the snakes humidity.

One of the oil filled space heaters might work too, put on say 80 degrees, and you might save on energy cost from not having to heat the racks as much.

Very true it help heat and reduce moisture.

to do it right you should plug the heater into a thermostat /rheostat? whichever is correct and turn heater to high...the switch will shut it off not the built in heater controls.........

.......I keep room as close to 82 at eye level all year..some racks heated, most are not......

Ryan,

I had a similar problem a few months ago. What I did was close off all of the open spaces into the room and purchased a small radiator heater for about thirty dollars. I have that heater in the middle of the room, and it keeps the room temperature at about 80 degrees. Seems to work perfect for me.

Thanks for the responses everyone. How are the space heaters on electricity? That sounds like the best option. Those ones you plug into the wall seem pretty safe as far as fire risk goes.

I volunteer for a reptile sanctuary and we have a large barn to insulate in the winter. We use the oil filled heaters. They work great. However I would advise VERY strongly of using a high quality external thermostat. One of the heaters stuck in the on position and the barn got to about 100 degrees. Luckily we didn't lose anything, but we did learn a lesson.
