parasites and hunger strikes

anafranil Jun 24, 2007 04:29 PM

Hello again, long time no see,I'm here with a question I can't find the answear to.I am a member to a greek forum regarding reptiles that has seperate sections for each species.I have found several people over there that really know what they are doing. The problem is that over there these people treat their captive breds for parasites. It is a very common procedure for them that makes me wondering why I have never heard of it before over here...When I told them that my cham is on hunger strike they all thought of parasites at first telling me I should dose orally panacur. What is your opinion on this.I know that a lot of people over here have deep knowledge on chams so this is the reason I am asking
Thanks

It is possible for a CB to pick up a parasite....but I don't believe in shot-gunning. I think that you need to take a sample of feces to a vet so that it can be determined if your chameleon does have a parasite or not and what the parasite is. The appropriate medication and dose can then be prescribed. Panacur will not kill all parasites.

Just my opinion....

CBs definitely have some parasites...almost every feeder we give them will have some, but if the cham is healthy a few just won't cause much trouble. When a cham is stressed by something else, that can cause immune system problems which can also let the parasite population bloom. THEN there is a problem. I don't like shotgunning either. Why give the cham a poison it doesn't need or that won't work? A fecal is easy to do and you'll know just what is there and whether it needs treatment.

I am sick of seeing my cham not eat, also I'm fed up of trial and error to find what's wrong, because actually there's nothing wrong other than parasites.whether you choose to do a fecal test or not ,is another thing.panacur is a wide spectrum antibiotic that has almost no overdose so I'm going for it

Panacur will kill quite a few types of parasites...but it will not kill flukes and tapeworms. I don't think it works on coccidia and giardia (protazoan parasites) either.

True, broad spectrum means it kills several different kinds, not ALL kinds. Please get the fecal done.
