Speaking of saving lives...

Definitely no Alterna-related but this is where I prefer to post...My neighbors just came over to have me get a snake from their backyard(funny how word of the "snake guy" travels fast). It's an Atrox. Anyways, my question is, where do I release it? I know it should be fairly close for the best chance of survival, but there is a decent concentration of houses around here. Is it better to give it a chance farther from humans even though it might be farther than ideal from it's home area? Any suggestions?

There is a fair amount of data that suggests that many adult snakes translocated away from their natural home range succumb to predators in the first months after thier translocation (which is why I always try to release as near the GPS coord to their point of capture as possible).

However, your atrox was in an area that it was unlikely to survive in anyway. I'd move it at least a mile or two out into suitable open country habitat, preferably down a county road and not near a main highway.

That's exactly what I was thinking and what I did. I found a good spot just off a dirt road with no humans in sight...At the least, it will die in nature rather than by a shovel from an ignorant human. But at least it has a chance...Thanks for the reply!
BTW, is that data just for rattlesnakes due to them always returning to the same dens, or is it the same for most snakes?

I hear Texas just opened up a bunch of new wildlife sanctuaries.
