As far as helping...

Herptophile Jun 25, 2007 10:42 AM

As far as helping goes, I am working with some people to tentatively suggest the above mentioned items and so far the result has been hugely popular. Sweat equity would be greatly appreciated as far as doing some minor little things to the property while/before herping, I would take care of a lot of it as not many I think are willing to actually go out, and perhaps mend a fence, or fix a wind mill or other item for herping rights. What I find around here works heavily to our advantage…the land owners in this area do not give two damned cents about the snakes on there property, in fact when I ask about going out to just hunt snakes generally I get something along the lines of “take them, take them all, I don’t want them..” and so forth. I work in the oil field business so I meet a lot of land owners with huge tracts of land and/or the leases for such property. At the moment I have pulled together access to over 1,500 acres of private land throughout west Texas. No one from these forums seems to be all that interested in getting in touch with me about how they to can access the land, I would like to talk to others that would like to get this whole organization thing rolling. I grew up in Idaho, I speak ‘Red Neck’ thoroughly and am a hell of a salesman in this area, it isn’t difficult for me to arrange many large areas of land for us to hunt on. The only freaking problem is that it will take 1 just ONE moron throwing trash, gassing a hole, or running over/disrespecting the land owners property and we will forever loose rights to those areas. Right now the counties that I have land we can hunt in are as follows, Ector, Midland, Andrews, Crane, Pecos, Loving, Cockett, and some around River Road.

My contact information is as follows.

What you are doing is wonderful for the hobby and will benefit all of us, even if we never go onto any of those lands.

Keep an eye out for more info of the Herpetological Conservation Foundation. Rolling your current efforts into that soon to be formed organization will be a terrific fit.

In the meantime THANK YOU for your hard work and positive community relations!

Thank you much, a friend of mine is working on gaining access to a 20,000 acres of land in the south west texas *i.e. Alterna Country, that will be excelent for herper use!

...Use of this land can be linked to Herp Society membership?

That would be nice.... keep up the good work

Well that is not entirely accurate! There are a lot of folks that want access to private land, as well as the public roads and right of ways.

I think for now you should take small groups with you so that you can be a watchdog over the land and make sure no one litters or destroys habitat.

I have a lot of irons in the fire right now otherwise I would have contacted you about it. In the future I will get back to you.

We are organizing.

That is the current plan, i would like to meet more than the 2-3 people i normally go out with and introduce them to the area, and the 'safe' places to go herping.

I applaud your efforts and will be in line to put this land to good use, however, I install hurricane shutters and it is prime season. I usually take a vacation around end of May first of June and sneak off for long weekends following a good work week. I will be in touch soon! These will be prime candidates for any field trips the org. may take in the future, and give us the opportunity to help the land owner in various tasks that need to be done to earn our sweat equity!

This is great news. As long as EVERYONE respects the land we should be ok. I am working on access to land near Sanderson.
