wild caught corn in VT?

jonah Jun 25, 2007 02:39 PM

I know this sounds crazy but my in-laws sent me these few blurry pics of a snake they caught in their vegetable garden today. Funny thing is that their garden is in central Vermont. Could this be? I thought their northernmost range was NJ. It's doubtful that it was an escaped pet due to the fact that they live on 10 acres and so do all their neighbors. None of the next door neighbors have snakes as pets.

What do you guys think?

The pics look to me like a corn. What else could it be?

Thanks,
Jonah

It's hard to tell by this pic but,it looks like an eastern milk snake to me. Jeff

It's an eastern milk...and those are native all the way to Maine.

The others who replied are correct. Corn snakes are not native to Vermont. Eastern Milks have a similar pattern to corns and are native to that state. Here's what a clearer pic of what an Eastern Milk looks like. Juveniles often have red, chestnut or maroon blotches on a gray background. I found this one in Maryland a few years ago.

Its an Eastern Milk, i live in Northern VT and we have people bring them into the store all the time thinking they found corns, a few a year atleast, we even have them come in trying to sell them to us, we always say "no we cant buy them because it is a milk snakes and it is super Illegal to buy or sell them" generally they hear Illegal and go an release it where they found it
