NORTH WEST FLORIDA DAILY NEWS (Fort Walton Beach) 19 June 07 Suspicious animal death ruled a snake bite
A dog that was found dead earlier this month in Milligan was killed by a venomous snake.
The dog’s owners had been away for the weekend and came back to find their German Boxer, Fat Boy, lying in a pool of blood.
They suspected he had been shot several times and beaten because the dog’s snout was disfigured and there were holes found in his body, according to a Sheriff’s Office offense report.
That suspicion was quelled after the results from a necropsy recently came back.
Dee Thompson-Poirrier with the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society said that snake bites are common right now with pets. Little can be done to prevent it, but Thompson-Porrier advises pet owners to ask their veterinarians about antidotes.
Fat Boy was found dead in his kennel located inside the backyard of a relative’s home in Milligan. He was lying on his belly with his front feet crossed, which is how he normally would sleep.
Fat Boy was about five years old at the time of his death. He has been cremated.
