sex determination of balls

adamjeffery Jun 25, 2007 08:46 PM

i know that i should have it probed and i should actually know how to myself by now but i dont and their is no one near me that can do it safely thats within a 2 hour drive,
so with that said i just bought a male ball het axanthic and its the first ball that ive bought and its the first one i would want to breed. my buddy is giving away a ball that might be a female but i am unclear if the spurs have anything to do with determination or not the net has conflicting thoughts on this. so the pictures im going to post are the best i can get with my camera. the snake is approximately 3 years old weighs about 5 5 1/2 pounds and the one spur is missing the other is very, very tiny. i hope the pics are usefull and that you guys can help me out.

don't go by the spurs. I have proven females with large and small spurs. Ive also seen males with small spurs too.

I would have to agree with the previous reply - spurs are pretty much useless for determining ball python sex. My big female has equally large spurs. Her spurs are bigger than either one of my males' spurs. Get a probe kit, some lube, and be gentle.

Are you near SE Connecticut?

I can show you how to probe them correctly. A cheap probe set on Big Apple is less than $20 too.
