Had a GREAT time in Daytona..

oldherper Aug 17, 2003 06:49 PM

Met up with Gila7150, Shadindigo and better half, and vvvddd. All are fun folks to hang out with and it was nice to be able to put faces to screen names.

We managed to find a few Dry's at the show, and we all picked up at least one new animal. As usual, Dry's were grossly under-represented at the show. Ah, well...such is life.

Anyway, I wanted to say thanks to all you guys for spending some time with the old guy. I really enjoyed it and look forward to seeing all of you again soon.

By the way, Gila and Shad, my little Y/T ate 2 goldfish tonight for me. I just dropped them on the floor of the cage in front of her and let them flop around. They lasted about 4 seconds.

I'm glad to hear that you all had a great time. I hope to make it to that show SOME day. Congrats to everyone on their new drys! What did you guys pick up????
BTW, I somehow forgot to mention that I got a new hatchling female eastern last Sunday!!!!! Now I just need to pick up a male to go with my 2 females.

Us too!

You my friend are a wealth of experience and knowledge. It was a pleasure to hang out. For some of the rest of you, you now have independent verification that the spousal unit DOES exist. No pix tho'...

Certainly nice to have met and chatted with Gila7150 and vvvddd as well. We'll still need to get together for a field outing sometime. Hmmm, seems like you got the place OH (hint, hint)

Jeff Nichols

Unfortunately no dry's here- just don't have the space yet. I drool over them though especially after seeing Chris's yt.

Yeah, drys were underrepresented, but the good news is that of the drys present, most of the ones I saw were YT's and I've never seen YT's at any show before. I saw two pairs of TX indigos for $1200 each pair (too high, I thought).

oldherper Aug 18, 2003 11:23 AM

Yeah, I saw one pair of Texans..didn't see the other pair. The one pair I saw were sort of scraggly, skinny-looking yearlings up at one of the front tables. $1,200.00 was WAY too much for them. I figured if he was asking that much, there was not a lot of point in talking to him about them.

I did see a couple of pair of nice B/T's. And I bought a uni as well as a Y/T baby.

bobl Aug 18, 2003 12:18 PM

Who was selling the YT's, Glades? What did they look like?

Trust Aug 18, 2003 01:52 PM

Glades brought all they had, which was a dozen or so, from what they told me. They offered me the last pair for $400, then after I declined, Rob offered the same pair to another person for $300. The male had a slight kink in his tail, but you had to feel it to know it was there.

I would have bought them, but I promised myself I would sell all the babies I presently have (no drys) before acquiring any more snakes.

I saw another YT being offered for $450 at another table, but I don't remember who it was. It was over near Len Kyrsko.

Ben Seigel had an immature BT.

I was only there on Sunday, so I probably missed the rest of the drys on sale.

Bobby,

These were from the clutch the gravid W/C female that came in to glades provided. I know I said I wasn't in the market but...

It was great meeting all of you as well! Jeff and Beatrice, I look forward to doing some FL herping with you guys sometime soon. Gerald, next time Van and I make it up to GA, maybe we can meet up and go photograph some GA contortrix!
I spent way more money than I had to spend but it was definitely a good time. YT's weren't even on my list but that was one of those deals you couldn't pass up. I guess Glades didn't want to bother with the work involved in getting those hatchlings to feed but they had good body weight so I wasn't too concerned. That's awesome that yours already ate for you. I haven't tried feeding mine yet but I might try the old tuna flavored pinkies tonight. My cantil and both bush vipers ate Sunday night. I haven't disturbed the YT's yet for any pics but here's a not so great shot of one of my new girl settling into her new digs.

Gila,

We let ours acclimate until today. Lil' fishies got something in her belly. Now we're waiting to see if the plumbing works all the way through.

Please post your results on the tuna scented pinks, we all have to head that direction anyway.

Regards,
J&B

Chris,
Neat little critter! You must have gone back Saturday after I left and bought those. Which Cantil did you get, the bilineatus or the taylori? (Somehow I knew you were going to end up with a Cantil before it was over)

Sure, you guys come on up and we'll see what we can find. We can go down south and look for Diamondbacks, Canebrakes and Cottonmouths (maybe a Coral or two), rat snakes, pine snakes, etc...and may even be lucky enough to get a glimpse of couperi if we go to the southeast corner of the state (the best time to find those is in January). Or, we can go up North and look for Copperheads and such. The only catch is that it's find and photograph only, except for the venomous species....couperi goes without saying.

It would be a blast...maybe we could even drop down to Appalach for a day.

gila7150 Aug 18, 2003 07:34 PM

Yea...I was looking at them Saturday and I was able to get a pretty good deal on the pair when I went back on Sunday. They were raised in captivity since they were babies and the female appears to be gravid...(kinda late in the year but my friend who deals extensively with Atheris took a look at her and said she almost definitely is. (I don't really care either way) I got the male that has been with her...he's even a little brighter orange than her. I got one of those baby bilineatus...my friend Adam got the other one.
I noticed yesterday morning that the street by the Cracker Barrel where we all had breakfast the other day was called Indigo Drive. There was a street sign right in front of the restaurant...we should have taken a group shot there
....maybe next year.
As far as GA goes...me and Van are just interested in getting out and taking photos. (the only exception would be a Worth County female copperhead for my little male)

By the way...I didn't have any feeder fish or tuna in the house so I tried smearing chick guts on a pinky for the YT's....no luck. I guess I'll be headed to the store for feeder fish tomorrow night.

Yeah, i just dropped the live goldfish on the floor of the cage in front of her and then left her alone for a few seconds..she grabbed them right up.

I think I'll try scenting a live pinkie by putting it in a plastic sandwich bag with a few goldfish and see if she'll take that. I think it was all of the motion that attracted her. If the pinkies is alive and kicking, that should work too.

My little Y/T has a world of attitude....

TexIndigo Gal Aug 19, 2003 02:35 PM

I put our little YT in a small container to feed her, and she latched on to the end of my pinkie finger like she was going to inhale it. She hung on a while, too. Blood immediately pooled up under my nail and today I have five tiny puncture marks as reminders of her ferocity.

That was before I added the goldfish to the container with her, and I didn't touch them, so it wasn't from smelling like food.

It was gratifying that she ate readily, anyway. I've got four more feeder goldfish that I'll offer her over the next week or so, then we'll try transitioning to pinks.

shadindigo Aug 19, 2003 04:01 PM

we're photo folks too. Just in it for the experience, shared interest and learning. Would love the chance to burn some leave and gain knowledge from all of you guys on a trip.

OH, how's the Uni doing? You were just a little quicker than we were but we'd like to hear periodic updates. We kinda feel like Godparents .

Regards,
J&B.

oldherper Aug 19, 2003 05:08 PM

Hey Jeff,
The uni's doing just fine so far. He ate a F/T mouse, looks good. He's still in quarantine for the next 60 days or so, but I don't think he's going to have any problems.

We need to plan a herping trip or two...let's start looking at it.

shadindigo Aug 19, 2003 06:59 PM

Concur, let's start some e-mails and not clobber the board.

J&B
