I got a yeast question

rc_racer_007 Aug 17, 2003 06:53 PM

Okay whats the differance between bakers yeast and brewers yeast?

Which do you use to make FF media, and which do you use to sprinkle ontop of the media?

And this stuff isnt normal bread yeast right?

The baker's yeast goes on top. Brewer's yeast is a biproduct from breweries that use a different species--I can't come up with the name right now--cervicia? It's sold in health food stores as a B vitamin supplement, and I think that's the purpose of it in the media. That purchased for brewing is active, but when the media is heated to boiling, it probably wouldn't remain so. Search back on this forum where we once had an endless discussion of this--Homer's lecture. (I know, the "search" misses a lot, but you were around at the time, maybe May?)

ill search for it, i wish you could narrow to search down to atleast one forum.

Ok, so you can use bakers yeast for the media. and you can sprinkle it intop of the media right? so basically, you can use the same yeast for both applications?

No, they are not the same. In the medium we sell, we add brewers yeast directly into the mix. It increases production... A few grains of Baker's yeast (stuff you use for bread) is sprinkled on top.

Try the local pharmacy--health food section. It's more expensive, but probably more convenient than searching for home brew supplies.

Yes, GNC works well. Send me your address and I will send you a sample of our medium. Our medium already contains the brewers yeast. I think you will be pleased.
