I have Q's on my axanthic brooksi...

toyota85 Jun 26, 2007 01:39 AM

Since all this talk about axanthics has recently come up, I have a question. Whats the difference between a new england axanthic,a bhb anerythristic and a black and white axanthic? and how could I tell what I have? The breeder was unsure what line she came from and thought she had new england in her. So any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Thanks

well, the black and white phase is really black and white. Llemke and the new england phase are more purplish as hatchlings, as yours appears to be. but the quality of purple is often variable on the lighting of the environment. the bhb anerythristic line is really dark as hatchlings from what i have heard.
aside from what you were told, there is no real way to determine the difference between a llemke and new england bloodline. the genes are compatible, breeding llemke x new england will get you all axanthics. some say the new englands are cleaner as adults, but i have seen just as many clean llemke animals as well as "ugly" new england.

as an aside, i am really pleased to see all the interest in brooksi morphs again, especially axanthics/anerythristics, my all time favorite morph.

Your snake appears to be a Lemke line axanthic the NE babies are pretty drab as hatchlings, they really don't show any of the purple-dish blue for a long time! the Lemke line axanthic hatch out showing a nice amount of purple/blue... and are prettier babies but i always thought the NE strain made better looking adults (there are some really nice adult Lemke line axanthic)

but like Dave Said the two strains are compatible when bred together so you may have a cross town the two lines (without the proper history there's no way to really tell and be 100%)

looks like Lemke line to me.

On his price list Lloyd Lemke used to advertise this new axanthic line as "blue wax". The NE line is drab as babies but are guranteed to turn into smokers. I have worked with both lines and bred the NE to the Lemke sevral years ago to prove the lines allelic. As i aware i am the only person who has done this. I see those breeders who purchased the NE X Lemkes from me sell the babies as pure NE's but they are not. The crossing of the two did nothing to improve the look. That why I sold all mine off.

Now some people have produced some nice lemke line brooks due to outbreeding to various other nice light brooks kings direct from the s. florida locale. But you cannot tell if your axanthic will turn out to be a smoker for a few more years. Also the parent stock does not produce all nice ones even if the adults were nice with the Lemkes. Its a crap shoot. On the other hand the PURE New England line all turn out very light colored with dispersed pattern with a beautiful light blue hue. They are more costly (almost triple in price than Lemkes) but worth it if you are going to keep and breed them.
