Hows everybody in the field herp world today? I am in maryland (baltimore county) and am a local herper. I have a few spots that are reliable as far as finding snakes (milks ,black rats and hogs) in my area and am looking to check out some more areas. I was wondering if anyone on this forum is from the maryland area and if they feel like sharing some general locations for good herping. I am a hobbiest and am only interested in herps from the maryland area. I was speaking with a gentleman from the maryland area and traded him some info on my end about some of my spots to recieve a reply...not a good reply, but something along the lines of "Thanks for the info about your spots...sorry, but I cannot devulge info on spots I know. I have come back too many times empty handed." LAME TRADE, HUH? Hopefully some of you are would be more honest then this and share (on both ends) willingly.
Thanks,Matt

well when you use herping instead of captive breeding as a trade then you will eventualy come up empty handed, its happens
most the MD spots i know are all herped out from jerks keeping evrything they find . not too good of an idea considering civilization and developements being built evrywere and forests destroyed dont help our species stick with there original inhabited home .

I go herping in maryland as do others here. but only a fool would give you his spots. You have to earn it the hard way like the rest of us have done. Maryland spots are being built on at an alarming rate. I was in calvert, charles and st marys counties three weeks ago and i was astonished at the lose of habitat from 2 years ago.

No offense Matt, but many of the herpers in this hobby have spent years of time, T.L.C., and now, very expensive gas to discovering and developing their favorite sites. I personally have noticed a steep decline in fauna populations due to development, environmental, and unnatural habitat changes in recent years. Another issue that is very discouraging to field herpers is when they share info with their trusted "friends" and later find out that the "friend" or friend's friend has trashed the area, preventing future herping. This hobby is about getting out there and doing it. You will learn what to look for the more time you spend in the field. Luckily Field Herping for Dummies hasn't been published yet, but in this modern, high tech, internet era, many people can't understand why the people that have put years of work into their hobby don't just cough up the info. Well, I for one won't be doing that. There are plenty of resources to get you started, for example mcmartinville.com and Fieldherpforum.com . Because of this I can see why your buddy from Maryland responded this way. Now his failure to share info, if you agreed to swap spots is all together another issue, but if I was you, I would keep my spots to a close group of people that you have field experience with and off of th World Wide Web.
Good Luck! And watch out for those ticks!

Frankly a person shouldn't just email info out of the blue to somebody who didn't ask for it and expect something in return. That's just like if you were in a store and the owner just threw something in your cart and expected you to pay for it. First you should email the person and say "Hey I got a good spot for milks. I will tell you it if you tell me your kingsnake spot."
