Fancy Rats and Feeding question

Joe73998 Jun 26, 2007 02:40 PM

Hello All,

I saw some pics of some interesting rats on here. Can anybody recommend a good place to buy fancy rats. I'd like to use some as feeders and sell some to the local pet shops. The local pet shops around here only carry the common ones.

Thanks,
Joe

Also,

I forgot to ask, what's the best type of food to feed rats for feeders?

Thanks,
Joe

Define common and fancy. We have anything from pink eyed whites to hooded, blazed, pointed (like a siamese) blue, dumbo eared all in our feeder cages. What are you looking for?

I feed a high protein dog kibble that does NOT have red die.

Hi Sonya,

Thanks for answering my post. The pink eyed whites and hooded rats are very common in all of the local pet shops here. I'd like to have something different. The ones that look siamese must be pretty cool. I'm not sure what a blaze rat looks like. Is it difficult to ship live rats?

Thanks,
Joe

It is very expensive to ship live rats. Airlines and all. I would search locally if I were you. Blazed or badgers have a colored head with white down the center. If you go to pet rat keeper sites you can get an idea. I have found the siamese linked to the blues. Other than that I haven't any pictures just now. sorry.

If you do try to get rats through a pet rat site or breeder, just don't tell them what you want them for . =)

I would suggest finding a local feeder breeder, or go to a local reptile show. They usually have all kinds of rat colors, markings and coat types.

PetSmart also sometimes has some of the other types such as rex, blue, dumbo...
