question about breeding?

huckandtuck Jun 27, 2007 02:09 AM

hi, im new, to the cyclura forum, but, i have a few questions, because i am considering, breeding my male cuban rock (tucker) with a female cuban rock that i just bought from a friend, who is also on the forums. i was wondering if thier is only a few different bloodlines of cuban rocks in the pet trade, and if its possible that the genes are so limited that the species may become inbred.
because to the best of my knowledge, cuban rocks havnt been imported for years right, but maybe im wrong. what are the risks, of inbreeding??? and is it possible that many of the rock iguanas available to the pet trade are inbred? could this be why many of the three subspecies are crossed and hybridized?
Thanks, Josh (huck)

first off the hybrids come about when people want to make a quick dollar and breed a male cuban with a female blue caymne hybrid, that dirty's their gene pool, how ever cubans , there are a few types out the, you have the big gearthy cuban that originate from cuba and then you have the Peurto rician stock that come from PR..... hmm there is allot of gene pools out there for cuban's and a few breeders, now theres a samll chance that some where in there history they were once imbred , but its hard to tell with soo many breeders, just if you were planning to breed them be sure not to mix with blue caymen hybrids, then you have some breeders that like to imbreed a few history lines to get a full stature and better color...

well i'll have to borrow my girlfriends camera to take some more recent pics of them, but sooner or later, ill do that. the two of them are getting along allright, but i havnt decided whether i want to house them seperately yet. the female is really aggresive, she tries to scare tucker away from her sometimes, and she head bobs right back at him. they dont really fight or anything but they dont get along to well either, but maybe that will change given some time for them to adjust.

yea just give her some time to settle in she with become way less aggressive once she knows everyone and everthing... oh and by the way idk what breeder your male came from but the female came from richard blatt
