Hog Questions

mtherps Jun 27, 2007 12:40 PM

I have hognose snakes around where I live in Montana (or so ive heard) and so I wanted to ask about keeping them. I have six native bullsnakes that I am going to try to breed next year. So how do they compare to pituophis? What should I know about hogs if I decide to get one? Temperament? Housing? Breeding? Anything else I should know?
Thanks for your time,

-Rainer

I believe that in Montana your going to find western hogs, which our the easy species to keep even so. If you collect a well established toad eater in the wild you could end up with some problems with feeding. I am not agianst collecting wild snakes but it isn't worth it to try and collect established adults, If you find hatchlings or year or younger you might be ok. They breed pretty much the same a bulls. As for temperment check out youtube under hognose snakes and see how they react they are usally not willing to bite but very good bluffers. I have friends with wild caught westerns that tamed down nicely and I don;ty beleive it will be a problem especially if you only collect young specimens.
